New Mumbai-Sawantwadi Daily Express Service Launched
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Union Commerce & Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, along with Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, flagged off the inaugural service of the new daily train between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Sawantwadi Road. The service covers a distance of approximately 510 km and provides direct rail connectivity between Mumbai and the Konkan region, benefiting passengers across Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts.
Train Operations and Schedule
The train will operate daily as Train No. 15087 from CSMT to Sawantwadi Road and Train No. 15088 for the return journey. It departs from CSMT at 23:55 hours and reaches Sawantwadi Road at 14:15 hours the following day. The return journey departs Sawantwadi Road at 17:20 hours and arrives at CSMT at 06:40 hours the next morning, providing convenient overnight travel options. The service operates with modern LHB rakes for passenger comfort.
Extensive Connectivity and Stoppages
The service includes 23 stoppages at important stations: Dadar, Thane, Panvel, Pen, Roha, Mangaon, Veer, Khed, Chiplun, Savarda, Aravali Road, Sangameshwar Road, Ratnagiri, Adavali, Vilavade, Rajapur Road, Vaibhavwadi Road, Nandgaon, Kankavli, Sindhudurg, Kudal, and Sawantwadi Road, providing comprehensive coverage across the Konkan belt.
Festival Services and Capacity Enhancement
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that 350 special trains are being operated for Ganesh Utsav, with arrangements to increase to 370 trains if required. The new service is expected to provide additional capacity during festivals, holidays, and tourism seasons when passenger demand substantially increases.
Economic and Social Benefits
Union Minister Piyush Goyal emphasized that the service will connect lakhs of families with safe, fast, and reliable journeys. Improved freight movement will help fishermen and local producers transport goods to Mumbai more quickly, while enhanced connectivity is expected to create employment opportunities in Konkan and reduce migration. The service will also benefit students, employees, and families maintaining connections between Mumbai and Konkan, making Mumbai's higher education and healthcare services more accessible.
Major Infrastructure Projects
Railway Minister Vaishnaw detailed several major projects underway in Mumbai worth approximately ₹18,000 crore. Platforms designed for 12-coach trains are being systematically extended to accommodate 15-coach trains, with work already completed at several locations. The existing signaling system is being upgraded to modern signaling to improve capacity and efficiency. Additionally, 238 new AC local train rakes have been sanctioned, with delivery of the first AC local train beginning in 2027.
National Rail Infrastructure Developments
The Eastern and Western Dedicated Freight Corridors are now 100% complete. A new East-West Dedicated Freight Corridor from Dankuni to Surat has been announced in the Union Budget, designed to provide rail connectivity to Vidarbha, Marathwada, and Western Maharashtra, connecting towards Wardha and the port at Nashik. The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project is progressing rapidly, including construction of an undersea rail tunnel connecting BKC and Thane using two tunnel boring machines from Vikhroli and Ghansoli.
Konkan Railway Electrification
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde highlighted the completion of electrification of the 741-km Konkan Railway route in record time, enabling more environment-friendly journeys and increased train speeds.
