Defence Minister Rajnath Singh addressed the 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas celebrations in Dras on July 26, 2026, using the occasion to deliver significant updates on India's defence capabilities and geopolitical stance.
Singh explicitly stated that India would not engage in talks with Pakistan unless they focus solely on Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), which he described as an integral part of India illegally occupied by Pakistan. He referenced Operation Sindoor as proof of India's capability to respond decisively to Pakistani misadventures, asserting that India no longer distinguishes between terrorists and the governments that nurture them.
The minister provided a substantial update on India's defence indigenization progress, revealing that the country has dramatically reversed its defence import dependency. When the current government assumed office, India imported 65-70% of defence equipment, but now manufactures 65% of defence equipment on Indian soil. Singh highlighted several indigenously developed systems including the Akash-Teer air defence control system, next-generation Akash missile, INS Vikrant aircraft carrier, Tejas Light Combat Aircraft, Prachand Light Combat Helicopter, Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopter, Arjun Main Battle Tank, Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher, Astra air-to-air missile, and modern drones and counter-drone systems.
Singh emphasized that the government possesses the political will to give defence forces a free hand to respond decisively to threats, and exuded confidence that no adversary would dare cast a hostile eye on India while its soldiers guard the nation's borders. He paid tributes to Param Vir Chakra awardees Captain Vikram Batra and Captain Manoj Kumar Pandey, and described Kargil Vijay Diwas as a day that teaches the distinction between personal success and national duty.
The Defence Minister outlined the broader vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047, describing it as extending beyond economic prosperity to include strategic strength, cultural pride, and social harmony. He stressed that border infrastructure is being continuously strengthened with equal emphasis on modernizing military capabilities to enhance operational efficiency.
The commemorative event included wreath-laying at the Cenotaph, observance of silence for fallen soldiers, and participation by Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Vinai Kumar Saxena, Chief of the Army Staff General Dhiraj Seth, Northern Command Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma, and other military officials. Singh inaugurated a Virtual Walkthrough Portal designed to provide wider public access to the history and legacy of the Kargil War, and flagged-in the 'Shaurya Vijay Yatra' motorcycle rally that had been flagged off from the National War Memorial on July 14, 2026.
Simultaneously in New Delhi, Raksha Rajya Mantri Sanjay Seth laid a wreath at the National War Memorial alongside Chief of Defence Staff General NS Raja Subramani, Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, and Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.
