Banking and Credit
Total bank credit (excluding inter‑bank advances) as of 15 July 2026 amounted to ₹22,245,520.18 crore. The composition was: Loans, cash credits & overdrafts ₹21,804,815.40 crore; Inland bills purchased ₹109,659.89 crore; Inland bills discounted ₹295,679.77 crore; Foreign bills purchased ₹13,255.21 crore; Foreign bills discounted ₹22,109.91 crore. In the preceding fortnight (30 June 2026) total credit was ₹22,446,966.53 crore, indicating a modest decline.
Liquidity Position
Liabilities to others (deposits) reached ₹26,831,425.69 crore, comprising demand deposits ₹3,250,666.16 crore and time deposits ₹23,580,759.53 crore. Borrowings from banks were ₹65,405.84 crore, while borrowings from the RBI stood at ₹5,598 crore. Cash holdings were ₹76,413.76 crore and balances with the RBI ₹777,652.37 crore. Assets with the banking system included balances with other banks – current accounts ₹10,688.50 crore and other accounts ₹356,620.68 crore – money at call & short notice ₹58,020.86 crore, advances to banks ₹41,495.02 crore, and other assets ₹110,809.53 crore. Investments at book value were ₹7,315,291.41 crore, largely in central and state government securities amounting to ₹7,303,695.91 crore.
Systemic Overview
The scheduled banking system comprised 119 scheduled commercial banks, 26 scheduled state co‑operative banks and 55 scheduled primary (urban) co‑operative banks as of the current fortnight. The statement presents data for the fortnight ending 15 July 2026, with comparative figures for 30 June 2026 and the previous year’s reporting Friday (11 July 2025).
Regulatory Notes
The figures exclude deposits of co‑operative banks with scheduled state co‑operative banks, which are captured under item II(a). Borrowings from the RBI are shown under ‘Borrowings from RBI’ following the Malegam Committee’s recommendation to reflect repo/term‑repo/MSF transactions. Advances granted to public food procurement agencies (Food Corporation of India, state governments and related agencies) are included in bank credit under item VIII(a).
The RBI’s statement indicates continued expansion in both deposits and credit across the scheduled banking system, reflecting heightened liquidity and lending activity as of mid‑July 2026.
