Banking System Liabilities

The liabilities to the banking system as of 31‑May‑2026 comprised demand and time deposits from banks of ₹392,220.01 crore, borrowings from banks of ₹76,763.48 crore, and other demand and time liabilities of ₹54,035.29 crore.

Liabilities to Others

Deposits (other than from banks) totalled ₹26,002,105.61 crore, split between demand deposits of ₹3,312,312.37 crore and time deposits of ₹22,689,793.24 crore. Borrowings from other institutions amounted to ₹960,187.69 crore, while other demand and time liabilities were ₹1,209,262.44 crore.

Borrowings from RBI

Borrowings from the Reserve Bank of India stood at ₹92,900.00 crore on 31‑May‑2026, reflecting the inclusion of repo, term‑repo and marginal standing facility transactions as per the Malegam Committee recommendations.

Cash and Balances with RBI

Cash held by scheduled banks was ₹72,540.68 crore. Balances with the RBI were ₹793,521.42 crore, indicating the net position of the banking system with the central bank.

Assets with Banking System

Balances with other banks included current‑account balances of ₹9,242.15 crore and other‑account balances of ₹270,006.24 crore. Money at call and short‑notice stood at ₹39,630.64 crore. Advances to banks (due from banks) were ₹39,681.55 crore, and other assets amounted to ₹94,302.81 crore.

Investments (At Book Value)

Total investments were ₹7,034,653.05 crore, of which central and state government securities accounted for ₹7,034,159.84 crore and other approved securities were ₹493.21 crore.

Bank Credit (Excluding Inter‑Bank Advances)

Bank credit excluding inter‑bank advances reached ₹21,515,965.07 crore. This comprised loans, cash credits and overdrafts of ₹21,077,234.59 crore, inland bills purchased of ₹109,411.79 crore, inland bills discounted of ₹295,024.36 crore, foreign bills purchased of ₹13,469.48 crore and foreign bills discounted of ₹20,824.86 crore.

Aggregate Position of Scheduled Banks

The total size of scheduled commercial banks as of 31‑May‑2026 was ₹137,005.47 crore, while scheduled co‑operative banks stood at ₹52,074.00 crore. The banking system consisted of 120 scheduled commercial banks, 26 scheduled state co‑operative banks and 51 scheduled primary (urban) co‑operative banks.

The statement reflects a modest increase in public deposits and a slight contraction in RBI cash holdings, while overall bank credit continued to expand year‑on‑year, underscoring the resilience of the Indian banking sector amid ongoing liquidity management by the RBI.
