Liquidity and Policy Rates

The Liquidity Adjustment Facility variable‑rate reverse repo operations recorded net withdrawals each day from 10‑15 August 2026, amounting to a cumulative net absorption of ₹1,757,529 crore over the period. Variable‑rate reverse repo amounts were 154,481, 81,701, 53,845, 80,170, 80,235, 0 and 0 respectively for 10‑16 August 2026. The Standing Liquidity Facility and other rate‑sensitive facilities showed corresponding balances as listed.

External Sector and Currency Reserves

Total reserves stood at ₹6,841,778 crore (US$716,907 million). Foreign currency assets were ₹5,552,880 crore (US$581,851 million). Gold holdings were ₹1,063,305 crore (US$111,417 million). Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) amounted to ₹178,845 crore and the RBI’s reserve position in the IMF was ₹46,748 crore.

Banking and Credit

State government loans to the RBI fell to ₹29,684 crore from ₹34,130 crore, a week‑on‑week decline of ₹15,458 crore and a year‑on‑year fall of ₹19,905 crore. Aggregate deposits of scheduled commercial banks rose by ₹660,688 crore in the fortnight, reaching ₹26,941,367 crore, with demand deposits increasing by ₹239,803 crore and time deposits by ₹420,885 crore. Bank credit expanded by ₹343,420 crore in the fortnight to ₹22,078,095 crore, with food credit rising by ₹2,900 crore and non‑food credit by ₹346,320 crore.

Money Stock (M3)

M3 totalled ₹31,453,126 crore as of 31 March 2026, up ₹638,771 crore (2.0%) over the fortnight and 14.7% higher than the same period in 2025. Currency with the public increased by ₹26,562 crore (‑0.6%) fortnightly but was 12.9% higher year‑on‑year. Demand deposits with banks grew by ₹241,281 crore (7.2%) fortnightly and 18.8% year‑on‑year. Time deposits with banks rose by ₹422,618 crore (1.8%) fortnightly and 14.5% year‑on‑year. Other deposits with the RBI increased modestly by ₹1,434 crore (1.2%) fortnightly.

Sources of Funds

Net bank credit to the government was ₹9,369,275 crore, virtually unchanged fortnightly (0.1% rise) and 9.6% higher than a year earlier. Bank credit to the commercial sector reached ₹22,226,641 crore, a fortnightly increase of 1.5% and 18.8% year‑on‑year.

Data incorporate the impact of the merger of a non‑bank with a bank effective 1 July 2023 and the amendment to the definition of a fortnight under the Banking Laws (Amendment) Act, 2025, effective 15 December 2025.
