Overview

On 2 November 2026, the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) hosted the SIDBI MSME Samwad in New Delhi, bringing together industry experts to discuss how digital adoption and financial discipline can accelerate growth for India’s micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

Key Participants

The discussion featured Dr. Utpal Chakraborty, founder of Gahna AI Lab and an AI and quantum scientist, and entrepreneurship mentor Suresh Mansharamani, co‑founder of Tajurba Business Network. The programme was hosted by Amit Arora.

Digital Transformation Insights

Dr. Chakraborty emphasized that digital transformation is a cultural shift rather than merely installing software or digitising records. He advised MSMEs to start with core functions—accounting, billing, inventory management and customer relationship management—using scalable tools selected on the basis of business priorities. He noted that such incremental adoption can raise productivity without large upfront capital outlays. The conversation also covered how artificial intelligence, automation and digital public infrastructure—including UPI, Aadhaar and the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC)—can enhance operations, broaden market access and support data‑driven decision‑making. Cybersecurity awareness and data protection were highlighted as essential as enterprises become increasingly reliant on digital systems.

Illustrative Case Studies

The panel cited the transformation of women’s apparel brand FableStreet, which leveraged data analytics, technology‑enabled supply‑chain management and AI‑driven product recommendations to better understand customer preferences, streamline operations and improve the shopping experience. Another example was the electric‑vehicle charging firm Statiq, which adapted its business model to emerging EV‑charging infrastructure needs and aligned its expansion with appropriate financial partnerships, demonstrating the importance of market responsiveness and strategic planning.

Financial Discipline and Market Validation

Suresh Mansharamani stressed that successful enterprises first identify genuine customer problems and validate market demand before committing significant resources. He recommended systematic market research, prototype development, customer feedback loops and rigorous pricing and profitability analysis prior to product launch. Working‑capital management and cash‑flow planning were described as critical for survival; rising sales alone do not guarantee financial stability when customer payments are delayed. He urged entrepreneurs to monitor receivables, control inventory, understand cash‑conversion cycles and seek guidance from experienced mentors. Access to incubation centres, industry associations and suitable financing mechanisms was identified as further support for navigating operational and financial challenges.

Ecosystem Implications

The experts concluded that technology adoption and financial preparedness must advance together for MSMEs to scale effectively. While digital tools can improve operational visibility, customer engagement and decision‑making, disciplined financial practices and market validation remain indispensable for long‑term viability. Mentorship, workforce development, cybersecurity awareness and institutional support were underscored as vital enablers for smaller enterprises operating in an increasingly competitive environment.
