The document outlines permit obligations for Indian and foreign tourists, recent infrastructure disruptions, and the role of the authorised operator EasoTrip in packaging complete itineraries.

Permit Requirements and Fees

Indian citizens can travel freely to Gangtok, Pelling, Namchi and Ravangla, but must obtain a Protected Area Permit (PAP) for Tsomgo Lake, Nathu La and any part of North Sikkim. A registered Sikkim tour operator applies for the PAP using a photo ID and two passport‑size photographs. Foreign nationals must secure a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) for any Sikkim destination, including Gangtok; the RAP is free but also requires a passport, a valid Indian visa and photographs, issued at Rangpo and Melli check posts or Sikkim tourism offices in Siliguri, Kolkata and New Delhi. Additionally, every tourist aged five and above pays a ₹50 fee at hotel or homestay check‑in; the fee, introduced by the Sikkim Registration of Tourist Trade Rules effective March 2025, is deposited into a Tourism Sustainability Development Fund for infrastructure, roads and cleanliness.

Digital Permit Initiative

A stakeholder meeting on 18 August 2026 discussed moving PAP and RAP processes to a digital, operator‑routed system, but no launch date had been announced, so paper permits remain in use.

North Sikkim Access in 2026

Lachung, Yumthang Valley, Lachen and Gurudongmar Lake are open to tourists throughout 2026. Permits, however, can be suspended at short notice when heavy rain triggers landslides. After the South Lhonak glacial lake burst in October 2023, the Border Roads Organisation restored 28 km of the Chungthang–Lachen road and constructed a new 400‑foot bridge over the Taram Chu. The bridge admits only one light vehicle at a time, creating potential queues during peak periods. Permits for Lachen and Gurudongmar resumed on 9 March 2026. Earlier, in April–May 2025, landslides stranded over a thousand tourists at Chungthang and led the district to cancel all issued permits.

Seasonal Travel Recommendations

The optimal visiting windows are March‑May and October‑December, coinciding with the tourism peak. Spring showcases rhododendrons in Yumthang, while post‑monsoon months provide the clearest views of Kangchenjunga. The off‑peak period June‑September experiences monsoon‑related road closures on NH10 and in North Sikkim.

Road and Rail Infrastructure

NH10, the primary road to Gangtok, was closed from 7 July to 10 August 2026 after a landslide at the 20th Mile, with traffic diverted through Lava in Kalimpong district, adding several hours to travel time. The Sivok–Rangpo railway line, slated to be Sikkim’s first rail link, spans 44.96 km, mostly in tunnels, terminating at Rangpo on the state border; construction continues and the line remains unopened.

Typical Itinerary and Duration

A standard first‑time Sikkim tour lasts six to seven days, covering Gangtok, Tsomgo Lake, Nathu La (subject to opening days) and North Sikkim. Five days suffice if Lachen is omitted; nine to ten days allow inclusion of Pelling in West Sikkim. Travel time dominates the schedule: Bagdogra to Gangtok consumes 4‑5 hours; Gangtok to Lachen requires 6‑7 hours over 121 km due to mountainous terrain; Gurudongmar Lake is accessed pre‑dawn from Lachen. A buffer day is advised for weather‑related delays in the north.

EasoTrip – Official Tour Partner

EasoTrip, operating behind sikkimtourism.in, designs packages ranging from short Gangtok stays with Tsomgo Lake to full North Sikkim tours that include Lachen, Gurudongmar and Lachung. The operator arranges all required Protected Area Permits, provides vehicle and driver services, and books hotels aligned with permit dates. Pick‑up points are Bagdogra Airport (IXB) and New Jalpaiguri railway station (NJP). Before payment, EasoTrip supplies written confirmation of what is included—permit charges, Zero Point and Nathu La pricing, and the protocol if district authorities suspend North Sikkim permits because of weather.
