Takeda Partners Karnataka for Year‑Round Dengue Preparedness
The multi‑stakeholder dialogue titled “From Awareness to Action: Advancing Dengue Prevention in Karnataka” was convened in Bengaluru, bringing together Takeda Biopharmaceuticals India Private Limited, Karnataka Minister for Health and Family Welfare U.T. Khader Fareed, Minister for School Education and Literacy Madhu Bangarappa, more than twenty state government representatives, leading public‑health institutions, researchers, innovators, academia and civil‑society organisations.
Climate change, rapid urbanisation and shifting rainfall patterns are reshaping dengue transmission across India, prompting experts to warn that dengue is evolving from a seasonal outbreak into a year‑round public‑health threat affecting over half of the world’s population. Karnataka’s recent decline in dengue cases was described as encouraging but not a signal for complacency, given the continuing evolution of environmental drivers.
Participants endorsed a four‑point Call‑to‑Action designed to transition Karnataka from monsoon‑focused crisis response to continuous, 365‑day engagement:
1. Making dengue prevention year‑round – integrate behaviour‑change communication across schools, workplaces and communities, prioritising positive incentives over penalties.
2. Closing the loop of care – link community‑level screening directly to rapid diagnosis, timely primary‑health‑care referral and structured follow‑up.
3. Making data work – harmonise state and municipal surveillance data, strengthen ward‑level analytics, enable citizen reporting and ensure transparent treatment‑cost information.
4. Backing innovation – fund locally adaptable, youth‑driven solutions and tech‑enabled vector‑monitoring pilot initiatives across Bengaluru and the wider state.
Minister Fareed emphasized that Karnataka’s recent case‑count decline should not breed complacency; the state will strengthen prediction, prevention and management by exploring innovations in surveillance, diagnostics, vector monitoring, vaccination and community‑based prevention, aiming for a more resilient Karnataka capable of handling future outbreaks.
Minister Bangarappa highlighted the role of schools as catalysts, noting that assemblies, notice‑boards and parent‑outreach programmes already disseminate dengue awareness, and that linking public‑health messages with STEM and eco‑clubs enables students to demonstrate real‑world value of their learning.
Dr Mahender Nayak, Head of Intercontinental Markets, International Business Unit at Takeda, stated that advancing science, stronger surveillance, earlier detection, broader community awareness and the option of dengue vaccination are essential to shift dengue management from seasonal response to year‑round preparedness. Takeda committed to supporting evidence generation, scientific exchange and innovative approaches through partnerships with governments, researchers and health‑care leaders.
The blueprint aligns with World Health Organization recommendations that surveillance, vector control, early case management, community education and vaccination operate as an integrated strategy to reduce long‑term disease burden.
