Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacted with Team India representatives who participated in the 48th WorldSkills Competition held in Shanghai from September 22-27, 2026. India achieved 10th position in the international competition, winning 6 Silver Medals and 20 Medals for Excellence. The country was represented by its largest-ever contingent of 70 competitors participating across 63 skills categories at the event held at the National Exhibition and Convention Center in Shanghai.
During the interaction at 7 Lok Kalyan Marg, participants shared their experiences of adapting to new tools, software, technical systems, and work processes during the international competition. They expressed pride in representing India on the global stage and discussed the government's work toward skill development that is helping youth.
Prime Minister Modi congratulated the participants and urged them to become ambassadors of skill development, emphasizing that practical skills are as important as academic degrees. He highlighted that as technology evolves rapidly, young people must continuously acquire new skills, upgrade existing capabilities, and adapt to emerging technologies. The PM emphasized the need for coordinated efforts by youth, the government, and training institutions to establish India as a global hub of skilled human resources.
PM Modi underlined the objective behind establishing a separate Ministry for Skill Development and stated that skill training institutions are no less important than IITs and IIMs. He encouraged participants to develop skills in line with international market requirements and contribute to improving India's skill training ecosystem through their experiences and suggestions. The interaction was also attended by Jayant Chaudhary, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and Minister of State for Education, along with senior officials of the Government of India.
