Press Release – 9 July 2026, Gurgaon
The Department of Cardiology at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Patna, with support from the Terumo India Skill Lab (TISL), organized the inaugural MASTR KAIZEN (Masterclass in Advanced Stent Techniques and Reconstruction) programme on 8–9 July 2026 at AIIMS Patna. The two‑day national training was designed to equip young cardiologists and super‑specialty trainees with advanced skills in complex coronary interventions through live workshops, didactic lectures, case‑based discussions and high‑fidelity simulation‑based learning.
Simulation‑based learning enables participants to practice complex percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) procedures on simulators that replicate challenging coronary anatomies, allowing repeated refinement of procedural techniques, decision‑making and complication management without patient risk. The inaugural edition focused on Advanced Bifurcation and Chronic Total Occlusion (CTO) PCI strategies, providing hands‑on training in advanced stent techniques, intravascular imaging, procedural planning and complication management.
The academic sessions were jointly directed by Dr Kenichiro Shimoji, an internationally acclaimed interventional cardiologist from Japan, and Dr Anupam Bhambhani, Head of the Department of Cardiology, AIIMS Patna. The programme was held under the chief patronage of Prof (Brig.) Dr Raju Agarwal, Executive Director of AIIMS Patna, and chief guest Dr Bhanu Duggal, Professor of Cardiology and Vice‑Chancellor of HNB Uttarakhand Medical University.
Mr Shishir Agarwal, President & Managing Director of Terumo India, stated that the initiative reflects Terumo’s mission of contributing to society through healthcare and aims to empower the next generation of cardiologists with globally benchmarked procedural skills. Prof Raju Agarwal emphasized that simulation‑based education is redefining medical training by enhancing clinical competence and patient safety. Dr Anupam Bhambhani described the integrated approach of combining scientific principles with repeated simulator practice as a means to improve technical proficiency, decision‑making and patient outcomes.
Dr Anudeep Sandhu, Director of Medical and Clinical Affairs at Terumo India, highlighted the critical need for advanced procedural training as complex PCI procedures become increasingly important in contemporary cardiovascular care, noting that modern cardiac stents, imaging systems and catheter‑based procedures require tactile confidence and real‑time decision‑making beyond product knowledge.
The collaboration is positioned to create a sustainable platform for skill development, international collaboration and capacity building, ultimately contributing to safer, more precise and patient‑centred cardiac care in India.
