Tripura has transformed its medical education landscape, expanding from two colleges with roughly 225 MBBS seats to three NMC‑recognised institutions offering about 400 seats for the 2026‑27 admission cycle. This near‑doubling of capacity is driven by the addition of a private medical college in 2024 and an intake increase at the government college.

Medical Colleges and Seat Capacity

  • Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC), established in 2005, sits on a 42‑acre campus in Agartala, is affiliated with Tripura University, and is attached to the multi‑speciality Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital. For Academic Year 2025‑26, its MBBS intake is 150 seats, with tuition fees among the most affordable in the region.
  • Tripura Medical College & Dr. B.R.A.M. Teaching Hospital (TMC), a trust‑run institution founded in 2006, admits 100 MBBS students annually. Most seats are filled through the state quota, while a management quota allows candidates from outside Tripura to apply via state counselling.
  • Tripura Santiniketan Medical College (TSMC), the newest entrant approved by the NMC, admitted its first batch in 2024 with an annual intake of 150 seats. Its lower historical cut‑off ranks make it an attractive option for candidates with moderate NEET scores.

The combined seat count across these colleges is approximately 400 for AY 2025‑26, with the exact round‑wise matrix for AY 2026‑27 published on the official counselling portal before each round.

Eligibility and Competition

The bulk of seats (state quota) are reserved for candidates holding a Tripura Permanent Resident Certificate (PRC) or meeting domicile criteria. This results in a markedly lower competition‑per‑seat ratio compared with populous states. Non‑resident candidates can access seats through two routes: the 15% All India Quota (AIQ) seats at AGMC allocated via MCC’s national counselling, and management/NRI quota seats at TMC and TSMC filled through the state counselling process.

Counselling Process

The Tripura Medical Counselling Committee (TRMCC), constituted under the Directorate of Medical Education, conducts the entire undergraduate medical counselling on a digital platform integrated with the National Informatics Centre. For the 2026‑27 session, Round 1 registration opened on 18 August 2026. The online workflow includes:

1. Registration and fee payment on the TRMCC portal.

2. Document upload and verification, followed by publication of the state merit list.

3. Online choice filling and locking of preferred colleges and courses.

4. Seat allotment and issuance of the nomination/allotment letter.

5. Physical reporting at the allotted college for final document verification and admission.

Candidates need not travel for registration, choice‑filling, or allotment; physical presence is required only after a seat is allotted. Seats unfilled in any round are carried forward to subsequent rounds, including a stray vacancy round. Only a single registration per candidate is allowed; multiple registrations lead to rejection. The counselling portal also handles admissions for BDS, BHMS, BAMS, and BASLP courses.

Applicants must have scanned copies of proof of age, the NEET UG 2026 scorecard and admit card, the Higher Secondary (10+2) mark sheet, documents supporting Tripura eligibility (e.g., PRC), and any applicable category certificates such as SC/ST/OBC‑NCL, EWS, or disability certificates. All documents are physically verified at the time of reporting.

Beyond favourable seat mathematics, AGMC offers a government‑fee MBBS program with a high patient load at GBP Hospital, providing robust clinical exposure. Agartala, the state capital, is compact, affordable, and has an airport, keeping overall study costs modest. All three colleges are NMC‑recognised and affiliated with Tripura University, ensuring national validity of degrees for postgraduate entrance and practice anywhere in India. The state’s expanding healthcare sector also promises growing employment opportunities for graduates.

Cautionary Note

All admissions must occur through NEET merit and official counselling—either TRMCC for state‑level seats or MCC for the AIQ. There are no backdoors, guaranteed seats, or agents who can influence allotment.
