Three Trump administration cabinet secretaries—Energy Secretary Chris Wright, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy—are scheduled to tour the Sable offshore oil project off the California coast later this week.
Sable Oil CEO Jim Flores said the visit will focus on discussing legal strategies related to the company's ongoing dispute with California authorities over a pipeline system that caused an oil spill in 2015, as well as a proposed offshore oil tanker loading system that could allow the project to bypass state waters entirely.
The Trump administration ordered the Sable project to restart months ago despite objections from state officials, reflecting a federal push for increased oil production in California, while Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom and state legislators continue to promote renewable energy and electrification initiatives.
Sable is currently in talks with federal officials about the offshore loading system, which aims to mitigate regulatory constraints by avoiding state waters.
