UCIL Uranium Mining Operations and Health Impact Assessment
The Health Physics Unit (HPU) of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) conducts regular environmental monitoring around uranium mining facilities to evaluate operational impacts. Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) operates under regulatory oversight from the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), with periodic inspections by AERB, Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS), and State Pollution Control Board (SPCB). Continuous radiological monitoring of workplaces and surrounding environments has been conducted since operations commenced, with results consistently indicating radiation exposure to workers and public remains within AERB-prescribed limits.
Health Survey Findings in Jharkhand Villages
UCIL recently conducted a health survey in surrounding villages of its Jharkhand establishments, covering multiple villages and medically examining a large number of villagers. The observed health issues were typical in nature and similar to those generally found in rural areas with comparable socio-economic conditions. The major finding of all past studies concluded that disease patterns around uranium mining operations cannot be ascribed to radiation exposure.
Ongoing Monitoring and Community Welfare Initiatives
UCIL, in coordination with BARC's Health Physics Unit and regulatory agencies, is implementing long-term measures for health monitoring, environmental surveillance, and local community welfare. Regular monitoring includes workplace radiation, environmental samples (air, water, soil, and food), and occupational exposure to ensure compliance with AERB standards. Periodic health surveillance and medical examinations of workers are conducted, while health assessment programs for nearby villages are undertaken from time to time.
Under its Corporate Social Responsibility programs, UCIL implements community welfare initiatives including provision of safe drinking water, healthcare services, sanitation, education, skill development, and infrastructure development for local communities. Additionally, awareness programs on radiation safety are organized periodically with participation from villagers, Gram Panchayat representatives, media personnel, school teachers, students, and representatives of UCIL and BARC's Health Physics Unit.
