Vice-President of India Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan visited the Cellular Jail in Andaman and Nicobar Islands on August 8, 2026, as part of his two-day visit to the territory. During the visit, he paid homage to freedom fighters who endured suffering for India's independence, specifically laying a wreath at the Martyr's Column and paying tribute at Veer Savarkar's cell. The Vice-President also visited Swatantra Jyoti, the Central Tower, Gallows, and the Museum and Exhibition Gallery, and witnessed the Light and Sound Show depicting the heroic saga of the freedom struggle.
In his remarks, Radhakrishnan described Veer Savarkar as a unique and fearless revolutionary whose burning patriotism inspired generations of young Indians. He noted that while the British Raj intended to demoralize freedom fighters by imprisoning them in Cellular Jail, Savarkar never became demoralized and ultimately it was the British Raj that became demoralized. The Vice-President also highlighted Savarkar's contributions to the fight against untouchability and social discrimination.
Radhakrishnan emphasized that India's quest to become more powerful is not to dictate terms to others but to ensure that India never wants to be dictated by anyone in the world, which he defined as real freedom. Upon arrival at INS Utkrosh, Sri Vijaya Puram, the Vice-President was received by Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands Admiral Devendra Kumar Joshi (Retd.), along with senior officials and dignitaries, and was accorded a ceremonial Guard of Honour.
