Overview
China’s smartphone sector is pivoting toward agentic artificial intelligence as overall device sales decelerate, with multiple manufacturers unveiling AI‑centric handsets.
ZTE’s Agentic AI Launch
ZTE Corp (HK:0763) showcased the NaviX Ultra at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, branding it the world’s first agentic AI smartphone. The phone is offered in black, pink, white and blue and integrates ByteDance’s Doubao assistant, which can be activated via a voice command or a dedicated hardware button. Unlike conventional phones that merely add isolated AI features, agentic devices are engineered to execute user instructions autonomously across several applications; on‑device AI models handle low‑latency routine tasks while cloud‑based models process more complex requests.
Early Market Response
ZTE initially presented a prototype under its Nubia brand in December, pricing the device at 3,499 yuan (approximately $516). The first production run comprised 30,000 units, which sold out rapidly. Secondary‑market transactions later saw used units trading at roughly twice the original launch price. At the Shanghai conference, Nubia executives demonstrated capabilities such as real‑time photo editing, map creation and travel planning, though they withheld detailed technical specifications for the latest model.
Competitor Activity
StepFun introduced its own AI‑enabled smartphone featuring a proprietary operating system and the Amoo assistant. Honor, now independent of Huawei, announced plans to release devices later in the year that will incorporate an AI agent developed in partnership with Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.
Broader Industry Context
Chinese manufacturers are accelerating AI integration as they confront higher memory costs, inflationary pressures, and weak consumer demand, which together are contributing to the steepest‑ever projected annual decline in global smartphone shipments for 2026. Budget‑focused Chinese brands are especially vulnerable to thinner margins.
Apple’s Position
Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) has regained market traction in China since late 2025 and recently secured regulatory clearance to roll out Apple Intelligence, leveraging partnerships with Alibaba and Baidu Inc.
Market Outlook
According to IDC, AI‑enabled smartphones are expected to represent more than 50 % of China’s smartphone market in 2026. ZTE has indicated that it will disclose further technical specifications for the NaviX Ultra later in the year.
