Strategic Significance
The 6.63 GWh BESS capacity at Khavda, Gujarat represents:
- World's largest single-location battery energy storage system
- More than 50% of India's operational BESS capacity of about 12.6 GWh
- Capacity equivalent to battery storage of more than 150,000 mid-sized EVs (40kWh battery pack)
- Enough energy storage to power around two million homes daily
- Capacity to meet almost twice the Delhi Metro's estimated daily electricity requirement
- Can support peak electricity demand of cities like Nagpur, Patna or Vizag for several hours
Project Execution Timeline
- 6.63 GWh milestone achieved within 14 months of commencing on-site BESS construction
- Latest capacity addition commissioned in just 10 months from start of construction
Future Targets
AGEL is:
- On track to add over 10 GWh of BESS capacity in FY 2026–27 (FY27)
- Targeting 50 GWh of storage capacity over the next five years
- Also pursuing pumped storage projects (PSPs) as part of broader strategy
Technology and Integration
- BESS uses lithium-ion battery technology
- Integrated with Energy Management Systems (EMS) and automated telemetry
- Supports grid stability, peak demand management, and reduces energy curtailment
- Integrated with AGEL's 30 GW RE plant development at Khavda across 538 square kilometers
