Project Overview

Delectrik Systems will deploy India’s first utility‑scale vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) with a capacity of 100 MWh. The project was awarded through a competitive tender won jointly by Delectrik and Bondada Engineering Limited and is being executed for NTPC Renewable Energy Limited, a wholly‑owned subsidiary of NTPC Limited.

Strategic Context

NTPC, India’s largest integrated power utility, currently operates over 90 GW of installed capacity and has set a target of 149 GW by 2032, of which 60 GW is slated to be renewable. The 100 MWh flow‑battery system will be installed in 2027 at Khavda Solar Park, a site projected to become the world’s largest renewable‑energy park with 30 GW of generation capacity by 2029. Delectrik previously installed a smaller 3 MWh variant of the same technology at Greater Noida in 2025 for NTPC.

Technology and Manufacturing

The battery will use Delectrik’s non‑containerized flow‑battery architecture, which is suitable for large commercial, industrial, and utility‑scale applications. This deployment marks the first non‑lithium utility‑scale battery energy storage system (BESS) in India and is the first of its size to be 100 % designed, engineered, and manufactured domestically.

Management Commentary

Dr. Vishal Mittal, Founder & CEO of Delectrik, described the project as a milestone for both the company and the nation, emphasizing its role in long‑duration energy storage essential for large‑scale renewable integration. He announced that Delectrik aims to secure an order book of at least 1 GWh of flow‑battery capacity within the next 12 months, targeting markets in India, Australia, ASEAN, Africa, and other geographies.

Vertical Integration Initiatives

To support its growth, Delectrik has established two wholly‑owned subsidiaries:

  • Delectrik Resources Pvt Ltd (DRPL) – focused on upstream activities, including vanadium oxide production, beneficiation, and eventual ownership of vanadium assets.
  • Delectrik Esaas Pvt Ltd (DEPL) – dedicated to downstream services, offering Energy‑Storage‑as‑a‑Service (ESaaS) to commercial and industrial customers, including data centres.

Industry Significance

The deployment underscores the importance of long‑duration energy storage technologies, such as flow batteries, in achieving India’s energy‑transition goals by enabling reliable, safe, and sustainable integration of renewable generation into the grid.
