UniCredit Secures ECB Approval to Exceed 30% Stake in Commerzbank

UniCredit S.p.A. received formal authorization from the European Central Bank (ECB) to increase its equity holding in Commerzbank AG beyond the previously stipulated 30% ceiling, with the ECB imposing no upper limit on any further increase. The ECB’s decision is described as a pivotal step in UniCredit’s ongoing acquisition of the German lender, signalling the regulator’s favourable assessment of both the transaction and UniCredit’s overall financial standing within the European banking sector.

UniCredit has indicated that it intends to satisfy the remaining regulatory requirements and any outstanding conditions attached to the Commerzbank offer by the end of the calendar year. Upon completion of these steps, UniCredit expects to own roughly 50% of Commerzbank’s voting rights, thereby attaining control of the German bank.
