Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Shri Amit Shah issued a message on Hindi Diwas 2026 celebrating India's linguistic diversity while emphasizing Hindi's role as a unifying language. The message highlights that Hindi serves as a language of dialogue, communication and coordination across different sections and communities, noting that its development must progress alongside respect and promotion of all Indian languages.
The message provides historical context, noting that Swami Dayanand Saraswati (Gujarati speaker) wrote Satyarth Prakash in Hindi, Mahatma Gandhi established the Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha in Madras in 1918, and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose (Bengali speaker) adopted Hindi as the communication language for Azad Hind Fauj. The Constituent Assembly adopted Hindi as the Official Language of the Union of India on 14 September 1949.
Current government initiatives include the National Education Policy placing mother tongue at the center of education, with engineering and medical education being imparted in Indian languages and competitive examinations conducted in multiple Indian languages. Technological advancements include the 'Bharati' tool, an Artificial Intelligence-based tool developed by the Department of Official Language, and 'Hindi Shabd Sindhu', a digital dictionary with more than 8.27 lakh entries. An 'Indian Language Section' was established in 2024 to facilitate administrative communication in Indian languages.
The message connects language policy to broader initiatives including the transformation of Rajpath into Kartavya Path and replacement of British-era laws with three people-centric laws: Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam. The Parliamentary Committee on Official Language has submitted four new volumes of reports to the President during the Modi Government's tenure.
The message concludes by noting this year marks the 150th anniversary of the composition of 'Vande Mataram' and calls for making Hindi and all Indian languages instruments in building Viksit Bharat by 2047.
