Government Launches Special Swachhata Campaign 6.0 Web Portal
Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences and MoS in the Prime Minister's Office, launched the web portal for Special Swachhata Campaign 6.0 on September 16, 2026. The campaign represents the evolution of the Swachhata initiative that began in 2014 from a simple cleanliness program into a comprehensive whole-of-government and whole-of-nation movement.
Over the past five years, the Swachhata campaign has generated substantial economic value, earning ₹5,000 crores through scrap disposal while achieving significant operational efficiencies. The campaign has freed 1,000 lakh square feet of office space, cleared approximately 2 crore files for improved record management, and undertaken more than 24 lakh cleanliness campaign sites across government establishments.
The Special Campaign 6.0 will focus on strengthening scientific waste management with particular emphasis on effective collection, segregation, and environmentally sound disposal of e-waste in compliance with e-waste management rules. The upgraded digital platform will enable real-time monitoring during preparatory, implementation, and evaluation phases, including a dedicated module for tracking e-waste disposal.
The campaign period runs annually from October 2 (Gandhi Jayanti) to October 31 (Sardar Patel Jayanti), serving as an annual reiteration of the government's commitment to maintain cleanliness, efficiency, and responsiveness throughout the year. The initiative has expanded to include offices and public spaces across the country, including remote locations, public sector undertakings, autonomous organizations, missions abroad, and citizen-facing establishments such as post offices, schools, and railway stations.
Dr. Jitendra Singh emphasized that the campaign has driven behavioral change among citizens, making people increasingly conscious about littering and cleanliness in public spaces, while also demonstrating the economic value of waste through the "Waste to Wealth" principle. Secretary of DARPG, Smt. Nivedita Shukla Verma, noted that the campaign has redefined governance culture by making efficiency, cleanliness, and responsiveness everyday features of government functioning.
