The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment published a case study highlighting the impact of the National Fellowship for Scheduled Caste Students (NFSC) Scheme through the experience of Rahul Kumar, a 33-year-old PhD scholar from Janjgir-Champa district in Chhattisgarh. The fellowship provides financial assistance of ₹45,700 per month, which includes fellowship support and House Rent Allowance (HRA), aimed at reducing financial barriers for students from Below Poverty Line (BPL) families pursuing higher education.

Rahul Kumar faced significant financial constraints and resource limitations that hindered his pursuit of advanced research. His academic journey was further challenged by institutional practices including the imposition of regulations outside the University Grants Commission (UGC) framework. The fellowship assistance, which began in July 2023, provided much-needed financial stability and addressed the resource-related constraints that had previously impeded his research work.

The NFSC Scheme is designed to promote inclusive access to higher education and enable scholars from economically weaker backgrounds to contribute to the nation through research and knowledge creation. The case study demonstrates how timely educational assistance can help scholars continue higher studies and work toward their academic aspirations, with the fellowship adding immense value to both research and personal life by easing financial barriers.
