Regulatory and Policy Measures
The Reserve Bank of India originally issued a directive under Section 35A read with Section 56 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 to Samarth Urban Co-operative Bank Ltd., Osmanabad, Maharashtra, through Directive No. NGP.DOS.SSM1.No.S581/15.04.381/2025-2026 dated 06 Oct 2025. The directive was for a period of six months, expiring at the close of business on 07 Apr 2026.
On 30 Mar 2026, the RBI extended the period of operation of the same directive up to the close of business on 07 Jul 2026, as recorded in order DOR.RG/D-65/15.04.381/2025-2026. All terms and conditions of the original directive remained unchanged during this extension.
The RBI, satisfied that further extension serves the public interest, exercised its powers under sub‑section (1) of Section 35A read with Section 56 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 to extend the directive for an additional three months, from the close of business on 07 Jul 2026 to the close of business on 07 Oct 2026, subject to review. The RBI expressly noted that this extension should not be construed as an indication that it is satisfied with the financial position of the bank.
The press release is signed by the Chief General Manager, Brij Raj, and carries the reference Press Release: 2026-2027/615.
In summary, the RBI has sequentially extended the regulatory directive governing Samarth Urban Co‑operative Bank Ltd. first to July 2026 and now to October 2026, maintaining all existing conditions and emphasizing that the extensions are made in the public interest without implying any improvement in the bank’s financial health.
