Regulatory and Policy Measures

The Reserve Bank of India, exercising powers under sub‑section (1) of Section 35A read with Section 56 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949, has extended the earlier directive issued to The Gauhati Co‑operative Urban Bank Ltd., Guwahati. The original directive (No.GWH.DOS.ADM.No.S233/01‑10‑101/2025‑2026) dated December 17, 2025, provided a six‑month operational period ending on June 17, 2026. This was subsequently extended to September 17, 2026, via Directive No.DOR.MON/D‑16/12‑29‑108/2026‑2027 dated June 11, 2026. The RBI now further extends the period for an additional three months, moving the expiry to close of business on December 17, 2026, subject to review. The RBI stated that the extension is in the public interest but expressly noted that it should not be construed as an indication that the RBI is satisfied with the bank’s financial position. All other terms and conditions of the original directive remain unchanged.

The extension reflects the RBI’s continued supervisory oversight of the bank, ensuring that operational continuity is maintained while the bank’s financial health is assessed. No new regulatory conditions or corrective actions were introduced in this extension.

In conclusion, the RBI has granted a three‑month extension to the Gauhati Co‑operative Urban Bank’s directive, maintaining existing terms and emphasizing that the extension does not signify confidence in the bank’s financial status. This action underscores the RBI’s commitment to public interest and regulatory prudence.
