Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal virtually inaugurated the new online bilingual Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) program at IIM Udaipur, emphasizing its potential to bridge the rural-urban divide through technology-enabled education delivered in both Hindi and English. The program represents a unique initiative to make quality IIM education accessible to a wider demographic, leveraging India's approximately 100 crore internet users to deliver management education in simple, understandable language through digital platforms including smartphones, laptops, and screens, though examinations will be conducted offline to maintain accountability.
Minister Goyal provided four specific suggestions to strengthen the program: implementing monthly physical interactions between faculty and students at different locations to complement the hybrid model; emphasizing soft-skill development including technology knowledge, communication skills, teamwork, and cultural exchanges; incorporating experiential learning through on-site visits to factories, ports, and industrial clusters for practical management experience; and adopting global best practices including audio-visual tools, credit transfers under the New Education Policy, and potential partnerships with other institutions for joint programs and research internships in the fourth year.
The Minister connected the program's launch to broader economic opportunities, noting that new free trade agreements are giving fresh boost to manufacturing and prioritizing innovation, thereby opening global opportunities for India's youth. He highlighted how COVID-19 accelerated the integration of technology with education, making EdTech companies essential rather than supplementary and enabling digital bridges between villages and cities. Goyal also drew parallels between the program's virtual delivery model and India's FTA negotiation processes, which increasingly rely on virtual interactions across different time zones to achieve speed and quality improvements.
