Indian Maritime University Achieves Global Recognition and Significant Growth

The Indian Maritime University (IMU) has emerged as one of the world's top 10 maritime universities and the highest-ranked maritime university in India over the past 12 years, reflecting significant transformation in India's maritime education ecosystem. Under the leadership of Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, the university has evolved from a predominantly classroom-based institution into a modern maritime university with strong emphasis on research, innovation, and industry collaboration.

Quantitative Performance Metrics

IMU has demonstrated remarkable growth across key metrics. Registrations for the IMU Common Entrance Test (IMU-CET) have increased five-fold, rising from 14,751 in 2014 to 73,395 currently. Female participation has seen an extraordinary 18-fold increase in girl cadet enrollment, marking a significant milestone in making the maritime sector more inclusive. The university's innovation output has substantially improved, with patent filings increasing from one to seven.

Industry Engagement and Partnerships

The university has significantly expanded its industry and academic collaborations. Since 2021, IMU has established 60 partnerships, comprising 22 domestic and 4 international industry partnerships, along with 20 domestic and 14 international academic collaborations. Technical consultancy projects undertaken by IMU's core faculty have grown substantially from three projects worth ₹63.94 lakh in 2014 to 16 projects valued at ₹10.78 crore currently.

Infrastructure and Future Plans

IMU has strengthened its academic infrastructure through modern libraries, advanced simulators, and enhanced recreational facilities. The university has aligned its academic programs with industry requirements while integrating the objectives of the National Education Policy 2020 into its curriculum. Future development plans include modernization of the Mumbai Port and Kolkata Port campuses, establishment of Centers of Excellence in Shipbuilding and Maritime Skills, and deepening research partnerships with industry and leading global institutions.

Strategic Importance and Vision

The development of IMU is positioned as critical to India's maritime ambitions, with human capital described as the foundation of India's maritime future. The university's growth is aligned with the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, aiming to strengthen India's position as a global hub for maritime education, innovation, and skilled workforce development. Union Minister Sonowal proposed organizing a nationwide Maritime Skilling Fair to create greater awareness about career opportunities in the maritime sector and expand the talent pipeline for India's growing blue economy.

The meeting was attended by Vijay Kumar, IAS, Secretary of Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, and Malini V Shankar, Chairperson of IMU, along with other senior officials, emphasizing the coordinated efforts across government, academia, and industry to improve India's position in global shipbuilding.
