Implementation of AgriStack and Digital Agriculture Mission
The Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare has developed AgriStack as a farmer-centric Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) built as a public good for efficient, easier and faster service and scheme delivery to farmers. This infrastructure provides a comprehensive profile of every farmer including farmer's details, land records, crops grown, and assets such as livestock and fisheries.
AgriStack consists of three foundational registries associated with the agriculture sector: Farmer Registry, Geo-Referenced Village Maps and Crop Sown Registry, all created and maintained by State Governments/Union Territories. The Farmer Registry serves as a foundational database for efficient, transparent and faster delivery of agricultural services and is being integrated with various farmer-centric schemes and digital platforms to expedite credit disbursements, access to crop insurance, weather advisories, and MSP-based crop procurement systems.
Adoption and Implementation Metrics
As of 3rd August 2026, more than 10.31 crore Farmer IDs have been created across the country by synchronizing farmers' details with their digitized land records. During Rabi 2025-26, the Digital Crop Survey (DCS) was conducted in 648 Districts covering more than 31.3 crore plots across the country. Manipur has initiated the process of DCS and is participating in the creation of Farmer ID.
Data Governance and Security
The State Farmer Registry is built in a federated manner, meaning ownership of the data remains with respective States. The Ministry has developed AgriStack in accordance with the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 and the Digital Personal Data Protection Rules 2025, ensuring complete privacy of farmers' data by collecting data only with farmer consent and giving farmers full control over their data for sharing with authorized entities for specific purposes. Security features are fully compliant with cybersecurity guidelines of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), with farmers' information maintained in encrypted manner so only authorized systems can read it.
Technology Initiatives
Under the YES-TECH initiative of the Crop Insurance Scheme, technology-based yield estimation is being implemented for Paddy, Wheat, and Soybean crops using Artificial Intelligence (AI) & Machine Learning (ML) approaches. Additionally, a digital initiative called Digital General Crop Estimation System (DGCES) has been developed to provide accurate and timely crop yield data for crop production estimates.
