Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi interacted with Team India representatives from the 48th WorldSkills Competition at his official residence on October 9, 2026. The participants shared their experiences of adapting to new tools, software, technical systems, and work processes during the international competition held in Shanghai from September 22-27, 2026.
India achieved 10th position at the competition, winning 6 Silver Medals and 20 Medals for Excellence. The country was represented by its largest-ever contingent of 70 competitors participating across 63 skills categories. Participants expressed pride in representing India on the global stage and discussed the government's work in skill development helping youth.
Prime Minister Modi congratulated the participants and urged them to become ambassadors of skill development, emphasizing that practical skills are as important as academic degrees. He stated that as technology evolves rapidly, young people must continuously acquire new skills, upgrade existing capabilities, and adapt to emerging technologies. The PM emphasized the need for coordinated efforts by youth, government, and training institutions to establish India as a global hub of skilled human resources.
Modi underlined the objective behind establishing a separate Ministry for Skill Development, stating that skill training institutions are no less important than IITs and IIMs. He encouraged participants to develop skills aligned with international market requirements and contribute to improving India's skill training ecosystem through their experiences and suggestions. The interaction was also attended by Shri Jayant Chaudhary, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and Minister of State for Education, along with senior government officials.
